Olympics
Just was curious how many people are excited about the Olympics starting the weekend? What events are you looking forward to seeing?
Related to the Olympics, I invite everyone to check out Candle For Tibet!!!
Not overly excited about the Olympics but I'll probably watch a little of it. Usually I go for the basketball (both mens and womens), boxing, wrestling and maybe some of the swimming.
Over the years the Olympics has lost much of its luster. If a story develops I might tune in, but being honest I've got other things I'd rather pay attention to.
Nutworld, I told you the story of how I won the gold at the '84 games in Los Angeles in the Synchronized Masturbation competition didn't I? I was able to complete my entire routine without ever having both feet leave the bed and touch the floor. :yikes:

yes you did, and my mental imaging has NEVER been the same since. |
/me does best Commander McBragg impersonation as I puffs on a pipe............
"Quite." |

If I had any kind of sports network I'd pay more attention to it. The only event I want to watch they never seem to show on your standard stations. I've been into archery all my life (even did Olympic competition for several years), but I've yet to see it aired. Besides, they've added motocross and a few others that I wouldn't consider very sportsman like. Granted it takes skill, but still.......at least the skateboarding and BMX are closer to what I would consider an Olympic sport.
I want to watch the Chinese win the gold for the Censorship race, and probably see at least one thing get canceled due to pollution.... :D
Yes, I am cynical. But I love the tradition of the Olympics and I'm sure I'll watch at least gymnastics and maybe a few other events. |
I like to wacth swimming, gymnastics and track & field. This year I'd like to add woman's beach volleyball (the suits are so tiny).
I must be doing something wrong, I can't find the jelly wrestling in Beijing.
I guess I'm weird becuase I love the Olympics. The tradition of it is so old that it boggles the mind. I"ll probably watch the gymnastics and swimming and diving only though, just on account of time.
There is an interesting and intriguing historical development in regards to the Olympic Games.
Neat article, jseal. Thanks.
I've always enjoyed the Olympics, but, I must admit, this year I haven't been excited by them at all. Don't know if I'll watch any or not. Probably not. |
I watched the NGO channel's show on the buiiding of the "BIRDNEST" Olympic Stadium in Beijing. Very interesting. Pacifica radio{KPFK} this morning, stated that the 2008 Olympic games will cost more than the previous 5 games together. Some of the leading corporate sponsors are; Coca Cola,MacDonalds, and of course the official candy is a Snickers bar. Go figure. All in all,I enjoy watching the competitions, if only I can find them televised at reasonable hours.
Might I suggest TIVO? Or even the low tech, VCR and a blank tape? I know, a kid that actually remembers VCR's. Scared yet?
I love the Olympics. I'm really looking forward to swimming this year just to see Torres race.
Actually here in this area. China town is shutting down and putting up screens so people can watch opening ceremonies.. We are taking my daughter as she was adopted from china
not really excited i guess it's the time difference (again). Is baseball a medal sport or exhibition this year ? That's the only thing I'd watch plus we're running into exhibition football (American)
OMG! :faint:
If you are watching the opening ceremonies, ....................... China! Regardless of anything ..........past, ..........present, ........ it IS the future. They can do ANYTHING they want done. |
Unfortunately PF is correct.
We are looking at the masters of the next generation. |
With the ceremonies over, ........ I can't retract my thought. :(
The awakened giant is standing. |
The opening ceremony was *IMPRESSIVE*.
How many times have you heard me use the word "impressive"? |
I will grant you that what I saw of it (which wasn't much) did look quite spectacular.

That speaks volumes. I'd say they were pretty cool. The same way I'd say the Apollo 11 mission was kinda neat. ;) |
I stayed up to watch the boys 4x100 relay last night. Fab!
Equestrian events are really my thing, could watch it all day. I have enjoyed the swimming...GO AUSSIE GO *L*
Now if i had the time off work so i could actually catch any of the stuff i like it would be brilliant, but i'm only managing to catch dribs and drabs :( |
Can you say "VCR"? :D
Which would work well if i knew EXACTLY when said things would be on *LOL*
Hi OrliFanatic,
This is now the battle of the institutes of sport, not the "privateers". |

I imagine it must be quite confusing for your schedule...the events themselves are happening pretty close to your time zone, but some of the big name competitions are being held at ungodly hours Beijing time, just so NBC (NoBodyCares) can run them live in US primetime... I think it was last night I saw your Aussie girl win the gold for the breaststroke...the only competition there was who would come in a distant 2nd (we need an "oh wow!" smilie) |
Oh Wow! :D
Did China win a Gold in the mime competition?

Leisel Jones...and yep i watched it too. She can sure punch those strokes out!! An Excellent win there, and certainly well deserved! |
I am not interested at all int the Olympics, but if I need to I will only watch the water sports
Quote:
Yes, that was the new Milli Vanilli competition. |
I especially enjoied the 25 meter Hack 'n Wheeze, and the Where did we throw that discus? competition.
Where did you get to see that? I've seen a tiny bit of people ridding bicycles really fast, .... lots of gymnastics and volleyball in a sandbox and LOTS and LOTS of swimming. We know who bigfoot Phelps is. Now can we see some of the other 28 sports, from archery to wrestling, that make up the summer Olympics? Maybe like the pentathlon that it was all about to start. Just because we the US sucks at it doesn't mean we don't want to watch some of it.
They showed the basketball at one point I think......and I've been wanting archery to be televised for years. Unfortunately, for the networks it's all about ratings so we'll never get to see anything but the gymnastics, volleyball, and swimming. It sucks monkey nuts.
