filing for Chapter 11

Coincidence??? Movie is released and a week later they file for Chapter11???


Where do you grocery shop...what are the chains in your area?

We have Publix, WalMart, Albertsons, Harveys,Winn-Dixie and of course a few small markets.

I don't think the movie has anything to do with them filing chapter 11. I called this almost two years ago when the Super Wal-Mart opened up.

At the main intersection there is an Albertson's, Publix and Winn-Dixie. I shopped at Winn-Dixie because it was the cheepest. Then two years ago a Super Wal-Mart was put in about 2 miles away.

The moment Wal-Mart opened Winn Dixie died. They in no way can offer the lower prices that Wal-Mart offers and it's obvious by the lack of cars in the parking lot that most are like me and now go to Wal-Mart for their groceries.

The supermarket chains in the Chicago area have almost all been bought out by larger companies or folded.

Eagle had been around for over 100 years but folded two years ago. Some of their locations have been 'taken over' by other stores, though there are a couple that still sit vacant. Dominick's is now owned by Safeway, Jewel by Albertson's. Cub Foods I _think_ is part of SuperValu, out of Minnesota. The big thing here is the competition they get from Wal-Mart, including Supercenters, Target, including Super Target stores, and Meijer out of Michigan. K-Mart is still here, but in much smaller numbers. And it almost seems as if there are as many Walgreen's opening up as Starbucks, and they (Walgreens, not Starbucks) all carry some food products. It's very competitive, with very tight margins. I wouldn't be surprised to see further consolidation....

Such a shame...many of the guys I went to high school with started out at their first jobs as associates of WD.

But, as the posters before have pointed out, it's not surprising. Less than four blocks away from where kleclere and I purchased a home, there's a Super Walmart. You'd never know by looking at the neighborhood we live in, but drive down the street a bit, and there it is. In Iowa, Hy-Vee food stores are the major regional chain. (And I'm hoping they *never* go under, as I can remember sitting in the car with my then three-year old and listening to him "read" the Hy-vee sign as he was learning to put letters together into words.) We also have a Fareway store here, which is also a regional chain on a smaller level. Good prices, great meat selection--but no alcohol, and they aren't open on Sunday. There were a couple of other independents here in town, but they've since closed. We do have one small one left--Naifeh's (nay-fees)--that has the best meat in town.

Woodman's, Cub Foods, Copps, Sentry, Piggy Wiggly, Whole Foods, and Pick 'N Save are the main ones in the Madison area. I do the majority of my shopping at Woodman's, which is a Wisconsin-Illinois chain. Low prices and lots of selection, all 24/7, unlike some of the others I mentioned. Luckily we have avoided the Super Walmarts and Targets, unlike many smaller AND larger cities have. You'd think we'd have one for having 200,000+ people. I am glad we don't.

Madison is also famous for having several small member-owned food cooperatives with lots of organic produce,etc. Lots of good feelings supporting these small, locally owned businesses directly in the heart of your neighborhood within Madison. We also have a few Asian, Jamaican, Mexican, and African markets in town.

We shop at Wegman's, quite possibly the best supermarket anywhere. They are based in Rochester, NY, but are slowly but surely expanding. We also have Tops, Quality Markets, and Jubilee. We lack the Super Wal-Marts, but not for lack of trying. We also have the best little family markets, Italian, Polish, German... mm mmm.

We have HEB, which dominates in this area, Super Walmart, Albertson's, Brookshires and Fiesta Mart.

Winn Dixie, Piggly Wiggly, Skaggs and Super KMart all left us.

being in a higher population area we've got loads; wegmans, acme, giant, and super fresh are four big conglomerate chain supermarkets. we have one or two family owned but their prices are higher and their selection is meager compared to the biggies. on the other hand, i don't have to wait in line 567893255 and a half hours to check out.

wawa--a convenience store and a good example of a family owned company who made good--is HUGE, there's one about every 5-10 miles...no joke! and they're ALWAYS busy.

we also have the superstores and target. although why they say they're superstores, i don't know. as far as i've seen, our superstores don't carry all that meat and produce that they show on the ads. do the ones by you guys carry that stuff?

more malls and strip malls, outlets and sams's clubs, than i would ever think could have half filled parking lots 8 days a week...but they do. and lots of little mom'n'pop ops too, but of course these places are dead.

i've heard of places, i think maybe in australia?, where even daycare centers are being run by large corporations.

i always feel kinda sleazy when i admit this but as much as i hate what the supper stores, from hardware to houseware, do to the little guy, i still shop there. i am on a budget, ya know? and i can get us everything we need at these places and still afford a little bit of fun on the side.

We have kroger's, super walmart, and a few other small local chains, with some family owned ones that seem to raise their prices everyday lol

I wanted to see that movie till i saw that they had used computers to make the dog react to certian things then i wasn't intrested lol

Kroger, Giant Eagle, WalMart, and Target dominate the Columbus market. I tend to shop 4 places -- we have a local co-op (just a block away) that ahs the best coffee and bread. I go to Giant Eagle for the "staples" like milk and eggs. I go to a local "gourmet" market -- Weilands -- for my meat and some of my produce...... And I go to Target for my personal care and laundry items (I can't resist the pricing).

I HATE WalMart and I will avoid it at all costs....

My favorite chain (BigBear) went out of business last year. It seems like the "middle sized" stores are being squeezed out -- the specialty shops (with $$$$$$ prices) and the suspercenters are taking over the market.

Super Walmart and my personal fav Super Target

Our chain stores include Big Y, Stop & Shop, Shaws & Super Walmart. What we need drives where we go. Each is good for certain things.

When we lived in South Carolina, I used to ride my bike down to the Piggly Wiggly or Winn Dixie to get donuts...and cigarettes. ha ha

Super Wal-Mart, Super Target and Meijers and a local chain that gets supplies from Super-Value. We have to drive at least 30 miles to shop and there are 3 Super Wal-Marts now, with two more in the planning stage. The Meijers was the first one in Illinois and there are now 3 of them in the state.
